Join our free Global Book Club with special guests David & Meredith Liben.
Last year, hundreds of teachers from around the world joined EKC for a 3-part series of virtual meetings to study Shifting the Balance 3-5. We’ve heard the calls to bring back the book club and this Fall, we’ll be diving into one of our favorite recent reads: Know Better, Do Better: Comprehension by David and Meredith Liben.

Erin Kent
Erin Kent consults with international schools around the world. She helps teachers and administrators grow customized approaches to PK–12 literacy that fit an international school’s unique context. Erin taught literacy for many years in urban, independent, and international schools before becoming a literacy coach and then P–12 Director of Curriculum and Instruction where she led a team of 13 instructional coaches and advised K–12 administrators on establishing data-based educational initiatives. Erin has spoken many times at Columbia University Teachers College in New York City and at international conferences on Readers’/Writers’ Workshop methodology, literacy coaching, curriculum development, and literacy leadership.
David & Meredith Liben
The Libens have taught, written and collaborated together for the past 38 years. Their teaching and work has spanned every grade and most school types, though it has been predominately in urban centers (mostly in Harlem). Both David and Meredith Liben have worked in rural schools
and in community college and teacher prep programs as well. They coordinated the project designed to provide the best information and tools to educators around questions of defining the text complexity and range of reading called for by the Common Core State Standards during the first decade they were in widespread use.
During the past several years, the Libens have been working to support teachers, students and instructional materials makers by teaching about the practical implications of reading research. Most recently, their collaboration has resulted in two books: Know Better Do Better: Teaching the Foundations so Every Child Can Read and Know Better Do Better: Comprehension, Fueling the Reading Brain with Knowledge, Vocabulary and Rich Language.
