Oral language development and print concepts are two key areas of emergent literacy - what happens when we help develop them simultaneously? In this course we will discuss ways to utilize children’s play as an authentic and meaningful way to expand vocabulary and make connections to print. We will discuss the importance of creating playful engagements that include opportunities for dialogue and reflection. Through their play students are making sense of the world around them - it is our job to enhance and facilitate the language they use to identify and describe it.

Specifically in this course we will discuss ways to:

  • Understand the science behind language development in the early years

  • Create language rich engagements

  • Connect the language we discover to print
