This course is designed for K-12 Chinese language educators and aims to develop students’ writing skills in Chinese. Over the span of 8 hours, participants will engage in four comprehensive sessions focused on enhancing teaching practices and improving students' writing abilities. The course will highlight effective theories and empirical practices that have been proven to nurture both Chinese and Chinese-English bilingual writers.

Session One: Theories and Research
Examine the theories and research that underpin effective writing instruction across languages, with a particular emphasis on the unique aspects of the Chinese writing system. Discover how these insights can guide teaching practices for fostering Chinese and bilingual writing skills. -
Session Two: Shared, Interactive Writing and Word Study
Explore strategies for shared and interactive writing that enhance students' learning experiences while integrating word and grammar study to support foundational writing skills. This session will focus on building a collaborative classroom environment where students develop their identities as writers, nurturing their independence in writing by consolidating their problem-solving abilities and character writing skills. -
Session Three: From Assessment to Learning Progression
Learn to support students in becoming assessment-capable while developing their writing skills through a personalized approach. This session will emphasize crafting learning progressions that accommodate diverse learners and strengthen their writing abilities. We will explore how to apply Universal Design for Learning (UDL) guidelines to enhance writing instruction, ensuring that all students have equitable opportunities to engage with and excel in their writing work. -
Session Four: Standards-Based Unit Planning
Focus on developing standards-based writing units that align with educational goals. Participants will acquire strategies for effective curriculum planning that showcase various solutions for mapping unit learning content while utilizing backward design to outline writing goals for lower grades that will lead toward the ultimate desired learning outcomes in higher grade levels. This approach encourages educators to identify key concepts and ideas in writing, empowering them to develop genre-based writing units that promote deeper understanding and skill development in their students.

专注于设计基于标准的写作单元,参与者将探索有效的课程规划策略,寻找不同的解决方案以梳理单元学习内容,并运用逆向设计思维,参考更高年级的最终学习成果来规划低年级的写作教学目标。这种方法鼓励教育工作者识别写作中的大概念和关键思想,用于计划基于体裁的写作单元,促进学生深入理解写作,并循序渐进地发展写作技能。
