Human brains are wired for oral language, and fluent translation of print on a page to the voice in our head is key for reading comprehension. As a “bridging process,” fluency allows readers to recognize words and comprehend at the same time. A product of strong decoding and strong language comprehension, fluent reading is often left to chance and neglected in our instructional practices. In this course we will unpack:

  • What is fluent reading?

  • Why use fluency rates as screening tools?

  • What instructional practices support developing fluency?

  • Which texts are best for fluency practice?

Through this course, you'll gain knowledge and strategies to ensure that fluency receives the attention it deserves in instructional settings, setting the stage for enhanced reading comprehension and overall literacy success.
